Marine Weather 2 (Seattle, Sept 26-27)

This two-day course builds upon the knowledge students gained from attending previous Marine Weather 1 courses by Lee Chesneau (required). After a review of key topics covered in Marine Weather 1, there will be reinforcement exercise pertaining to surface pressure maps to ensure that the foundation to move onto new topics is solid

New and important topics covered in this course include discussion of wind & wave development, propagation, & decay, along with the interpretation of “regional” versus “full ocean” wind and wave charts. This will be followed up with the all import discussion of upper air concepts as an introduction to the “holy grail” of weather forecasting and routing: “500 mb” upper air charts!  This also includes discussion of upper level troughs & ridges, flow patterns, & their importance to vessel weather forecasting & routing. There will be critical reinforcement application & and exercises!

The course will end with a full weather map discussion that summarizes and integrates both surface and upper air products discussed in both Marine Weather 1 and Marine Weather 2 (surface pressure, sea state/wind & wave, and finally, upper air 500 mb analyses & forecast charts).
